UPDATE ON COURSE DEVELOPMENT WORKS
Following the adoption of Motion ‘A’ at the SGM in August, advantage was taken of the good weather in September to make a significant start on the implementation of some of the proposals.
The new shape of the ‘Tank’ has been largely established with some additional minor filling required on the 7th fairway side – this will be carried out when weather conditions are suitable. As it has been infilled his area will be left to settle for some weeks before final shaping, topsoiling and sodding. That area of the ‘Tank’ alongside the 12th fairway will be completed over the next few weeks when an essential irrigation pipeline is installed to replace that removed as part of reshaping works. However much will depend on weather and ground conditions as we will not be transporting soil from where it is currently stored in the practise area if this caused damage to the course.
Work has also progressed well on the construction of the eight new bunkers approved .As expected some rock has been encountered but this will not be a problem – a rock breaker attachment for our own small excavator will solve matters. It is proposed to excavate all eight bunkers initially to ascertain nature of the underlying substrata and how they react to significant rainfall.
It is hoped to have all bunkers completed before the end of the year but it will be some time before they can be brought into play ( a major disappointment no doubt !).
Construction of new tees at the Ladies 2nd; mens 7th and 13th is unlikely to start until the new year and the planting /mounding at the 14/16th fairways is targeted for early spring again dictated by weather and soil conditions.
Expenditure to date on all of the works has been less than 3000 euro.
The large excavator and dumper which were on hire for 13 working days were hired at very competitive rates and our own staff operated these plant items. The cost of labour is not included in the 3k as these costs are incurred irrespective of any development works.
A further update will be provided before the end of the year and the understanding and patience of members during whatever disruption is caused is much appreciated.

THIS FRIDAY’S THEATRE NIGHT IN HOWTH GOLF CLUB “TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE”
A reminder that Theatre Nights return to Howth Golf Club on Friday night next, November 7th at 8.00pm, with the hugely successful production of “Tuesdays with Morrie”.
This play is based on the book which sold millions and was voted most popular Book Club read of 2000 with RTE listeners. It is based on the true story of Morrie Schwartz, a university professor, who suffered from the degenerating Lou Gehrig’s disease, during his final year of life. Little did he realise during his lifetime that his wisdom would touch millions and prove the adage that one good teacher’s influence on just one good student can affect positively on the lives of many.
This touching and at times funny drama features the two original actors, Terry Byrne and Andrew Murray.
Many of our members have seen this play and enjoyed it so much, they are coming back again. If you want a recommendation from a discerning theatre-goer, then Vice-Captain Joe Richardson says “Don’t Miss it”.
Tickets from the Club Bar at €15. And members – why not bring along a friend and show them that Howth Golf Club is the social and cultural centre of Howth.

Founded in 1916 the heath land links style course was designed by the renowned golfer and course architect James Braid, a 5 times winner of “The Open” Golf Championship who can count the design of the prestigious Kings and Queens Courses at Gleneagles amongst his greatest achievements.
James was well known for including dog leg design golf holes in his course designs and the 5th hole in particular is an excellent example of how he blended a great golf hole into the unique Howth Heathers. The exceptional views from the 16th tee are worthy of mention in any golf guide.
Take the Tour
Howth Golf Club is the perfect blend of old and new. Traditional and modern trends have helped maintain the character of the golf course originally envisaged by James Braid.
