OVERSEEDING OF GREENS
Our greens at Howth Golf Club are predominantly Meadow grass and as such are prone to problems of disease and seedhead production, while also having poor drought resistance.Daily growth with Meadow grass is often not uniform leading to slow and bumpy greens.
Our Agronomic Consultant Declan Branigan has advised that we introduce a more suitable grass, namely Creeping Bent by overseeding twice per annum starting now.A specialised machine will be used whereby seed is introduced into the rootzone by way of very narrow slits, followed by a light topdressing.
This process does not interfere with the roll of the ball, nor will the mowing height be altered,so members should not experience any additional problems on the greens. All top clubs overseed regularly without any problems.Members should be assured that the transition to a predominantly Bentgrass greens over time will be gradual and seamless and should not impact on our enjoyment of the course.

Founded in 1916 the heath land links style course was designed by the renowned golfer and course architect James Braid, a 5 times winner of “The Open” Golf Championship who can count the design of the prestigious Kings and Queens Courses at Gleneagles amongst his greatest achievements.
James was well known for including dog leg design golf holes in his course designs and the 5th hole in particular is an excellent example of how he blended a great golf hole into the unique Howth Heathers. The exceptional views from the 16th tee are worthy of mention in any golf guide.
