Our next show, on Friday December 7th will be “Good Night Delia”, a play and musical evening inspired by the life and times of celebrated Irish singer and war hero, Delia Murphy with Sharon McCoy playing the singer.
Delia Murphy was the Christy Moore of the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s and Ireland’s first recording super star with huge international hits including “If I were a Blackbird”, “The Spinning Wheel” and “Three Lovely Lassies in Bannon”. Overall, she recorded over 100 songs for the famed HMV label.
But her life outside music was just as dramatic. Her father was John Murphy who emigrated to America, made his fortune in the Klondike Gold Rush and returned home to Mayo to buy the local big house. He welcomed Travelling families to camp on his estate and it was around their campfires that Delia learned many of the songs that were to make her famous.
While at UCG she met her future husband who was to join the Irish diplomatic service and Delia found herself entertaining the diplomatic corps in embassies in London, Australia, Canada and Washington. Stationed in the Vatican during the Second World War, she was a key activist in protecting Jews and Allied servicemen fleeing from the Nazis.
Hers is a remarkable story. In 1961, after an appearance on the Late Late Show she fell ill and was to die later in hospital.
In our show, the songs and story of Delia is brought alive with the wonderful voice of Sharon McCoy and to quote the review in the Sunday Business Post
Phil Coulter once said Delia Murphy sang with a smile in her voice -75 mins in the company of Sharon McCoy’s charismatic reincarnation will put a smile on most faces too…Sunday Business Post today
Tickets at €15 are now available in the Club Bar. This is an ideal opportunity to enjoy a cheerful night before Christmas where our audience will no doubt join Delia in many of their favourite songs.

Founded in 1916 the heath land links style course was designed by the renowned golfer and course architect James Braid, a 5 times winner of “The Open” Golf Championship who can count the design of the prestigious Kings and Queens Courses at Gleneagles amongst his greatest achievements.
James was well known for including dog leg design golf holes in his course designs and the 5th hole in particular is an excellent example of how he blended a great golf hole into the unique Howth Heathers. The exceptional views from the 16th tee are worthy of mention in any golf guide.
