After a frightful Friday with gales and torrential rain, the prayers of The Mondaynighters were answered with a bright sunny day in which to draw down the curtain on our season.
Our competition was combined with our friends, The Tuesdaynighters, who played the white course whilst we pitted our talents against the yellow. The course was in excellent condition and had shifted most of the previous day’s deluge.
52 competitors turned out with hopes “to do the business”. The scoring was excellent and a newcomer to the club and The Mondaynighters delivered a superb performance to win the newly presented “Michael Kelly Trophy” and First Prize, which as usual was generously given by John McGuirk, who has always been a source of great encouragement to us.
The best score on the day, a magnificent 44pts. was achieved by Camillus Dooley, who sadly had not been able to play sufficient competitions during the season to qualify for a Mondaynighters prize. There must be a moral in there somewhere!
Winner “Michael Kelly Trophy” & First Prize: Bill Aston 42pts.
Second: Michael A. O’Neill 41 ”
Third: Matt Haugh 39 ”
Fourth: Michael O’Connor 37 ”
Fifth: Ian Whittington 35 ” (L9)
Visitors Prize: Camillus Dooley 44pts.
Our Final Dinner was well attended by most of the players and a most enjoyable meal was eagerly consumed by the hungry masses.
The Captain, Muiris, delivered a most amusing speech and included many kind references to the Mondaynighters and the Tuesdaynighters. Brian O’Connor replied on behalf of the Mondaynighters.
The “vital statistics” of the season were then disclosed. 101 players competed in 21 events( one competition lost to weather ) completing 907 rounds. Average turnout was 43 and “optimism factor” a healthy 89%. “Twosies” success rate 5.3%!!!
66 competitors shared 118 prizes.
The generous prize donors were acknowledged on the menu and thanked by all concerned. Other prizes donated on the night, ensured that no Mondaynighter went home without a momento of the evening and his day’s endeavour.
Neil Paul and Tony Brady then announced the closely guarded result of The Mondaynighters League.
Winner : Sean O’Sullivan 298pts.
2nd. Matt Haugh 274 ”
3rd. George Kearns 268 ” ( 273 – 5 prev.win)
Mondaynighter of the Year: Sean O’Mahony
The Greens c’tee. and course staff have done great work in recent years and our average scores show that the course is quite a bit tougher. We will have to continue fine tuning our course management or hope our “intelligent balls” live up to their title”!!!
The Mondaynighters thank John McGuirk and Jimmy Tully for their inexhaustible support and encouragement, Darragh Tighe and the office team for their admin. support, especially Catherine, who produced the beautifully presented Menu and finally the bar and catering personnel who attended our needs during the season.
We had a great season in 2014 and hopefully an even better one in 2015 when we get going on Monday 30 March.
